The Misericordia University men's soccer team lost to Rutgers-Camden, 2-1, on a late game-winner in the 80th minute, Tuesday on Mangelsdorf Field.
Nick Szczerba netted the equalizer for the Cougars in the 65
th minute. The junior midfielder controlled a cross pass from
Vincenzo Diliberti and beat the goalkeeper high for his first goal of the season.
The Cougars had several scoring chances in the first half, but couldn't capitalize. In the 14
th minute,
Dylan Molyneaux came away with a steal at midfield and carried the ball towards the box. Molyneaux ripped a shot from about 10-yards out, but it was blocked by a defender.
Ethan Benedict controlled his teammate's rebound and fired a shot wide.
Minutes later, Diliberti hit the crossbar on an attempt from just outside the box. The senior's shot deflected downward off the crossbar and was controlled by
Ethan Aigeldinger. The senior forward fired the ball at the keeper, but was unable to find the back of the net.
Aigeldinger had another opportunity toward the end of the half when
Cody Rogers sent him a pass from across the field. However, the shot was deflected wide after a diving effort from the Scarlet Raptors' keeper.
Dominic Pizzi kept the Cougars in the game with a crucial stop during the 39
th minute. Christian Ognibene fed the ball to Liam Craver in the box for a quality scoring chance, but Pizzi was able to deny Craver with a diving save.
In the 59
th minute, the Cougars threatened when a Molyneaux header was saved by the Raptors' keeper. However, minutes later, Szczerba knotted the game at one with the equalizer.
The deciding goal was scored in the 79
th minute on a Cam Allen free kick from just outside the box. Sinan Tuzcu tallied the team's other goal in the 37
th minute. Fatai King was credited with the assist.
The Cougars fell to 1-4-1 on the season while the Scarlet Raptors improved to 4-3-1. Misericordia will continue its four-game homestand against Messiah, Saturday at 3:30.
