The Misericordia University field hockey team shut out Manhattanville, 2-0, in its MAC Freedom opener, Saturday at Mangelsdorf Field.
Madisyn Granoski and
Kailey Vogl scored their first goals of the season in a contest that was heavily controlled by the Cougars' offense. Misericordia outshot the Valiants 18-5 with a 15-4 advantage in penalty corners.
After a scoreless first half, the Cougars struck with two quick goals midway through the second half. In the 58
th minute, Granoski beat the goalkeeper high on a fast break after
Mikayla Cavenas advanced the ball upfield.
Moments later, Misericordia added an insurance goal in the 61
st minute. After
Tori Carsley's rip was saved by Manhattanville's keeper, Vogl controlled the rebound and fired the ball toward the back of the cage.
The Cougars held a 10-0 shot advantage in the first half, but couldn't light up the scoreboard. The team's best chance came when Granoski ripped a shot from six-yards out in the 26
th minute. Following a Manhattanville save, the Cougars were unable to score on the ensuing scrum.
Katelyn Campbell recorded her first shutout of the season. The junior's biggest stop occurred in the 62
nd minute when she made consecutive saves following a Valiant penalty corner. The first shot was a rip from seven-yards out while the latter was a put back by Lexi Crites from Campbell's right side.
Misericordia improves to 1-7 overall with a 1-0 conference record. The Cougars play at Haverford, Wednesday at 7:00.
