Women’s Basketball Stays Undefeated, Rhine Captures 50th Win

The Misericordia University women's basketball team remained unbeaten with a massive victory over Valley Forge, 91-25, Saturday in the Anderson Center. Head coach Jason Rhine captured his 50th career win to become the fastest coach in the program's history to reach the milestone.

Japriya Carroll led all scorers with 17 points while shooting 6-10 from the field and 3-5 from three-point range. The senior guard also added five rebounds, three assists and two steals to go along with her game-high +36 plus/minus.

Rachel Carmody, who was recognized for her 1,000th career point prior to tip-off, tallied 14 points and grabbed six rebounds. In addition to her offensive production, Carmody put on a stellar defensive performance with a season-best three blocks.

The Cougars scoring was well-dispersed as 11 of their 13 players contributed with buckets.

Emma Hayes had a season-high 12 points to go along with six rebounds. First-year teammates Nora Tracey and Marykate Guerriero also achieved season-bests in scoring with nine and six points, respectively.

The Cougars never trailed in the contest and dictated pace from the opening tip. Misericordia shot 55.1 percent (38-69) from the field while Valley Forge managed just 21.3 percent (10-47).

After the Patriots hung around early in the first quarter, the Cougars ended the stanza on a 24-2 run in the final six minutes to take a 30-6 advantage into the second. Erica Haefele helped spark the rally with a fast break layup followed by a three-pointer to expand the team's lead to seven points with just over five minutes remaining.

Misericordia built on its momentum in the second quarter, outscoring Valley Forge 20-9. The squad entered halftime with a comfortable 50-15 advantage, which as their second most points scored in a single half this season.

The Cougars burst out of halftime with a 13-2 run to open the third quarter. Following a couple Patriot baskets midway through the quarter, Misericordia scored the last 11 points of the quarter to take a 55 point lead into the final stanza.

Misericordia wrapped up the final quarter with a 17-6 advantage to win by 66 points for the squad's largest margin of victory this season. The game's largest lead was 68 points, which was achieved with 54 seconds remaining in the contest.

The Cougars improved to 13-0 while the Patriots fell to 3-5 on the season. Misericordia will continue its four-game homestand against conference foe Delaware Valley, Wednesday at 8:00 PM.
