Women’s Basketball Remains Unbeaten with Conference Victory

The Misericordia University women's basketball team never trailed as they defeated conference rival Delaware Valley, 76-41, Wednesday in the Anderson Center. The Cougars remained unbeaten on the season with a 14-0 mark.

Japriya Carroll and Tessa Zamolyi led the way for the Cougars with a combined 37 points.

Zamolyi tallied a season-high 19 points with eight rebounds, three assists and one block. The reigning MAC Freedom Rookie of the Year shot 4-6 from three-point range and posted a game-high 37 plus/minus.

Carroll collected 18 points with eight rebounds and one assist while shooting 3-5 from long range. The senior guard currently leads the squad in scoring with 14.3 points per game.

Leanne Forsyth was the third Cougar to reach double-figures in scoring with 10 points. She shot an efficient 5-6 (83.3 percent) from the field in 18 minutes off the bench.

Rachel Carmody fell just short of a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds. The forward also added a season-high five assists and three steals to the box score.

Misericordia controlled the game from the opening tip with a dominant first quarter. Carroll opened the contest with consecutive three pointers to mount a 6-0 run in the first two minutes of play.

After an Aggies bucket with 6:19 remaining, Misericordia ended the quarter on a 13-1 run while scoring the final 10 points of the opening frame. The Cougars defense held Delaware Valley to just three points as the squad shot 5.9 percent from the field and 0-8 from beyond the arc.

After carrying a 19-3 advantage into the second quarter, Misericordia began to further separate themselves from the Aggies.  Zamolyi, who entered halftime as the leading scorer with 13 points, tallied seven points in the final three minutes to give the Cougars a 49-17 advantage at the half.  

Misericordia cruised to victory in the second half, outscoring the Aggies 37-24. The Cougars shot 44.6 percent from the field while holding Delaware Valley to just 24.2 percent on the night.

The Cougars improve to 14-0 with a 3-0 MAC Freedom mark while the Aggies fall to 7-7 and 1-2 in conference play. Misericordia will wrap-up its four-game homestand with Manhattanville, Saturday at 1:00 PM.
