MU Women Win Battle of MAC Freedom Unbeatens

Japriya Carroll scored 19 points to lead four players in double figures as the Misericordia University women's basketball team defeated Manhattanville, 82-71, in a battle of unbeaten MAC Freedom squads, Saturday afternoon in the Anderson Center.

Erica Haefele had 17 points and Tessa Zamolyi and Rachel Carmody added 16 and 12 points, respectively.

The Cougars remained undefeated at 15-0 and 4-0 in the MAC while the Valiants fell to 12-2 and 3-1.

Jordan Barth scored seven points and had a team-highs 10 rebounds and added five assists while Leanne Forsyth had a team-high six assists.

Zamolyi had nine rebounds and five steals and Carmody added eight rebounds and four blocked shots.

Misericordia used a 14-2 run to overcome an early 4-2 deficit and never trailed again.

Carmody hit a pull up jumper on the right baseline and Barth put the Cougars in front with a jumper from just inside the three-point line.

Carroll drilled a three-pointer from the right corner and Barth followed with a putback for an 11-6 lead.

Carroll converted a putback into a three-point play on the next possession for a 14-6 lead with 3:30 to play in the first quarter.

Zamolyi made a pair of free throws to cap the run.

The Cougars led 20-11 after the opening stanza.

MU methodically increased its lead throughout the latter half of the second period.

Haefele answered a Manhattanville three-pointer with a deep three of her own from the right wing for a 31-21 lead midway through the quarter.

After finding Zamolyi with a no-look pass on the right block, Haefele went coast-to-coast to convert a steal and then drained a foul-line jumper for a 41-25 lead with 1:25 to in the first half.

Carroll closed the half with a pair of free throws to give MU a 43-27 lead.

Manhattanville opened the second half with an 8-0 run to get within 43-37, but never got any closer as the Cougars answer with six straight points.

Carroll had two free throws and Carmody followed with a jumper in the lane and a layup off a nice feed from Barth for a 49-35 lead midway through the period.

The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the period and the Cougars led 66-54 heading to the final stanza.

The Cougars maintained a double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter and used a 7-0 spurt to build their biggest lead of the game, 80-61, with 3:02 to play.
