Paige Wampole and
Rachel Carmody both had double-doubles as the Misericordia University women's basketball team clinched the number two seed in the MAC Freedom with a 78-67 win over King's, Wednesday night at the Anderson Center.
Wampole had 16 points and 15 rebounds and Carmody added 16 points and 14 rebounds and
Japriya Carroll added 16 points.
The Cougars held a 53-30 rebounding edge and made the most of their 49 missed shots with 24 offensive rebounds.
Misericordia fell behind early as King's made its first 10 shots from field to take a 22-12 lead with 3:25 left in the first quarter.
Following an MU timeout, Carroll drained a three-pointer and added a layup off a
Kalynn Sefcik steal got get the Cougars within 22-17.
The Monarchs made a jumper to close the first quarter with a 25-19 lead.
Tessa Zamolyi found
Jordan Barth on the left block to open the second quarter with a layup and Barth added two free throws to cut the deficit to 25-23 with 7:20 to go.
Carroll drained a jumper from the left wing to pull even, 25-25, with 5:36 to go in the second quarter.
King's followed with a pair of three-pointers to go up, 34-28, with 3:12 remaining and led 37-33 at halftime after Wampole's short jumper to end the first half.
Misericordia chipped away throughout the third quarter and got within 43-42 on a Carmody put back with 5:05 to go.
Carroll gave the Cougars their first lead, 44-43, with a long jumper off a steal by
Leanne Forsyth and Carmody found Forsyth for a fast break bucket off a steal for a 46-43 lead.
Zamolyi grabbed two offensive boards and drilled a three-pointer from the left corner to make it 49-43 with 3:38 left in the third period.
Wampole put back her own miss and
Erica Haefele added a free throw in the closing seconds to give the Cougars a 54-47 lead after three quarters.
Zamolyi opened the fourth quarter with a jumper from the left wing with her toe on the three-point arc and
Emma Hayes found Wampole on the right block for a 58-47 lead early in the fourth quarter.
King's pulled within 66-60 with 3:25 to go, but Wampole used a nice drop step move for a lay in off a feed from Hayes to ignite an 8-0 run to put the game away.
Hayes made two free throws and Barth made a short jumper from the right baseline to make it 72-60 with 2:06 remaining.
Hayes ended the spurt with a put back of her own miss to give the Cougars their biggest lead of the night, 74-60, with 1:14 to go.
Misericordia improved to 20-4 overall and 9-4 in the MAC Freedom. The Cougars will close the regular season when they host Eastern, Saturday.
