Women’s Basketball Falls to DeSales in MAC Freedom Championship

The Misericordia University women's basketball team fell to DeSales, 75-59, in the MAC Freedom Championships, Saturday in Center Valley, PA.

Kalynn Sefcik led the Cougars with 12 points and two three-pointers while Paige Wampole tallied her fourth consecutive double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Leanne Forsyth was the third Cougar in double figures with 10 points off the bench. The senior shot 5-8 from the field while adding two rebounds and two assists.

In the opening stanza, DeSales got off to a 7-0 run to start the game. After a Misericordia timeout with 6:25 remaining, the Cougars scored their first two points of the contest when Wampole converted two free throws.

The Bulldogs answered with a bucket at the other end, but Erica Haefele drained a three-pointer from the wing after Wampole rotated the ball from the low post to make it 9-5.

The Cougars finished the first quarter strong with a 7-0 run. Sefcik got the rally started with a corner three-pointer off a well-executed inbounds play. Moments later, Wampole fought through heavy contact for a layup and Jordan Barth closed out the quarter with two free throws to make it 19-14.

After the Cougars and Bulldogs traded points to open the second quarter, Leanne Forsyth cut the lead to four points with a runner in the lane. Moments later, Wampole was able to trim the deficit to two points with a couple free throws, which capped-off a 13-3 run for Misericordia.

Later in the quarter, DeSales was able to build its lead to eight points, but Misericordia fought back with a 6-2 run to pull within four points.

Misericordia struggled from the field in the first half, shooting just 32-percent (8-25). The Cougars were able to keep themselves in the game with improved second quarter defense and an ability to draw fouls and convert from the charity stripe (10-11).

DeSales began the second half with a 5-0 run after taking advantage of two Misericordia turnovers. Samantha Shinkus got things started with a layup while Averi Jordan hit a three-pointer to take a 39-28 lead. Wampole then provided the Cougars with a much-needed two points after converting her free throws, following a Misericordia 30-second timeout.

With 7:09 remaining, the Bulldogs took their biggest lead with a layup that expanded the team's advantage to 46-32. Later in the quarter, the Cougars were able to cut their deficit to single digits with a 6-0 run midway through the third. Japriya Carroll started the stretch with a jumper and Haefele contributed the next four points with two free throws and a layup to make it 48-39.

The Cougars ended the third strong with two Rachel Carmody free throws to cut DeSales lead to nine points. Misericordia scored 19 points in the quarter with nine of them coming from the free throw line.

Misericordia carried momentum into the final quarter with a 5-0 run. Carmody opened the stanza with a layup and Sefcik hit a deep three-pointer from the wing to pull within three points.

However, the Bulldogs eventually built their lead back to double-digits with a Stanfield three-pointer with 5:03 remaining and maintained their distance from the Cougars on the road their seventh conference title.
