The Misericordia University men's basketball team lost to Marymount University, 76-69, in the first round of the ECAC Tournament, Wednesday night at the Anderson Center.
Stone McCreary led the squad with 14 points while adding six rebounds and an assist. The senior guard made four three-pointers and helped keep the Cougars in the game with a couple clutch shots.
Alec Rodway was the only other player to reach double figures for Misericordia. The senior had 10 points with six assists and three rebounds. He shot a perfect 2-2 from three-point range and was 4-5 from the field.
Patrick Douthit had eight points off the bench with three rebounds and two assists. He shot 3-3 from the field with two three-pointers while
Tony Harding contributed six points with a season-high three blocks. The junior forward made two threes, grabbed five rebounds and had two assists.
Marymount got off to a fast start with a 14-5 run to open the first eight minutes of the contest. The Saints' full-court attack held the Cougars scoreless for nearly five minutes during that stretch.
Harding broke Misericordia's scoreless drought with a corner three-pointer off a feed from Rodway. The All-MAC honorable mention blocked shots on back-to-back defensive possessions, which eventually led to a
Justin Iton fast break layup.
Moments later, Iton added a jumper in the paint to pull within two points. The big man then found
Jason Kenny down low to tie the game at 14-14.
The Cougars took their first lead when
Brendan Leonard knocked down a corner three-pointer to go up 22-20 with 6:26 remaining in the half. Moments later, Douthit would add a three ball to go up five points. However, the Saints would respond with a 19-0 run to end the half.
Misericordia struggled to possess the ball with 17 first half turnovers while Marymount only had six. The Saints went into halftime with a 21-4 advantage in points off turnovers.
McCreary tried to shoot the Cougars back into the game with back-to-back three-pointers to cut the team's deficit to 46-35 with 17:03 remaining.
Misericordia would eventually pull within single digits courtesy of a Rodway three-pointer with 8:45 remaining. Moments later, Rodway added a fast break layup and
Noah Rivera converted an and-one layup to make it 59-55.
With the Cougars trailing by seven,
Tyerell Mann helped capture some momentum with a tough and-one layup with 1:26 remaining. The senior then knocked down his lone foul shot to pull within four points.
Moments later, McCreary made it a one possession game with a deep three-pointer from the wing to pull within three points. However, the Saints would put the Cougars away with four free throws in the final minute of play.
Misericordia will end the season with a 14-12 overall mark while Marymount advances in the ECAC Tournament.
