The Misericordia University men's volleyball team swept a pair of matches Tuesday evening in the Anderson Center.
The Cougars swept Wilkes, 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-18) and edged Rutgers-Newark, 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 26-24, 23-25, 15-11).
Against Wilkes,
Ryan Miller led the Cougars with 14 kills while
Brian Ross added eight kills and three aces.
Dylan Sellitti had 34 assists and
Jason Campbell had a team-high nine digs.
Miller had 17 kills and three blocks against Rutgers-Newark and
Jason Campbell added 14 kills.
Billy Murphy had 10 kills and five blocks.
Sellitti had 47 assists as the Cougars improved 13-10.
In the opener, Wilkes took a 1-0 lead in the first set, but Miller had a kill and Sellitti added an ace to key a 4-0 run by the Cougars.
Ross had two kills as part of a 5-0 spurt as the Cougars stretched their lead to 12-4.
The Cougars closed the set with five straight points.
In the second set, Miller, Ross and
Billy Murphy had kills as the Cougars scored five straight points to take a 17-12 lead.
Leading 19-17, Ross had two aces and Miller capped a 6-1 game-ending run with a kill.
Against Rutgers-Newark, the Cougars had back-to-back blocks to take a 20-16 lead in the opener. After Rutgers-Newark rallied to tie it, 22-22, the Cougars used an error and a kill by Campbell and a block by Ross and
Matt Lavin to close it out.
The Cougars built a 16-10 lead in the third set, but R-N rallied to pull even, 17-17.
Matt Lavin's kill put the Cougars ahead 25-24 and MU utilized great hustle to keep the ball in play on the ensuing rally and forced a Rutgers-Newark error to win 26-24.
Rutgers-Newark rallied from a 20-16 deficit to win the fourth set, 26-23.
MU fell behind 2-0 in the finale, but Murphy was part of two straight blocks during a 5-0 run to take a 5-2 lead.
Ross and Campbell had kills during a 4-0 spurt to give the Cougars a 13-5 lead.
Rutgers-Newark got within 13-10, but Ross answered with a kill and a service error clinched the match for MU.
The Cougars will travel to Alvernia, Thursday.
