The Misericordia University men's volleyball team swept Alvernia, 3-0 (25-23, 27-25, 25-18) in a key MAC Freedom match, Thursday night in Reading.
Ryan Miller led the Cougars with 12 blocks while
Jason Campbell and
Billy Murphy both had eight kills.
Matt Lavin had five blocks,
Dylan Sellitti added 41 assists and
Conner Westerfield had 23 digs.
The Cougars trailed 16-15 in the opening set, but got three straight kills, including two by Campbell to go in front for good, 18-16.
The straight Alvernia errors, including a block by Sellitti, gave MU a 21-17 lead
Alvernia eventually pulled within a point, 24-23, but Murphy's kill clinched a 25-23 win.
The Cougars trailed throughout the second set until they scored the final three points of the match.
Alvernia took a 9-4 lead, but MU chipped away and got within 17-16 on a kill by Campbell.
Alvernia took a 24-22 lead on an MU service error, but the Golden Wolves committed two straight errors to pull the Cougars even, 24-24.
Alvernia went back in front with a block, but the Cougars got kills from Lavin, Murphy and Miller to steal a 27-25 win.
A block by Miller and Lavin and an ace by Campbell keyed a 5-0 run as the Cougars took a 13-9 lead in the third set.
Miller's kill and an ace by
Caleb Bauder ignited a 4-0 spurt to give MU a 19-13 lead and Alvernia never got closer than five points the rest of the way.
Misericordia improved to 14-10 overall and 4-3 in the MAC Freedom.
The Cougars will face Stevenson and Arcadia in a tri-match, Saturday.
