The Misericordia University baseball team opened its Spring Break trip with a sweep of Heidelberg and Otterbein, Saturday in Port Charlotte, FL.
Ian McCole tossed seven shutout innings as the Cougars beat Heidelberg, 7-0, in the opener.
Kenny Jarema had two hits and two RBI and
Sean Lyons had two hits and drove in three runs.
Kyle Rogalski struck out two in relief and
Isaac Snyder added a scoreless inning of work.
Against Otterbein, Jarema and
Parker Abate had three hits each and
Steve Weisensee had two hits and drove in three runs.
Kyle Lennon added three RBI to make a winner of
Tom Jacob, who struck out six over six innings without allowing an earned run.
In the opener, the Cougars plated a pair of two-out runs in the top of the second. With one out,
Dalton Emerich was hit by a pitch. One out later, he stole second and
Sean Boylan walked before
Jarema doubled down the right field line to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
MU struck for two more in the third inning.
Tyler Holzapfel was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and
Santo Guinta and
Steve Weisensee walked to load the bases.
Sean Lyons' infield single drove in a run and Emerich's RBI-ground out made it 4-0.
The Cougars closed out the scoring with three runs in the top of the fourth.
Jarema reached on an error and took second on Abate's bunt single. Guinta singled to center to load the bases with one out. Weisensee followed with a sacrifice fly and Lyons doubled to right center to drive in two more and make it 7-0.
Otterbein took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Cougars got the run back on Weisensee's sac fly in the bottom of the first.
MU scored two in the bottom of the second after
Conor Smith,
Billy Kerwien and
Sean Boylan all reached via hit by pitch to load the bases.
Smith scored on a double play with Kerwien moving to third. Abate reached on a bunt single and
Tyler Holzapfel followed with an RBI-single to center.
Weisensee walked to lead off the third and scored on Lyons' triple to center field to make it 4-1.Â
Billy Kerwien's sac bunt scored Lyons and Boylan, Jarema and Abate all singled to add a run and make it 6-1.
The Cougars got three more in the sixth. Jarema drew a one-out walk and went to third on an errant pickoff attempt. Abate singled to drive in a run and moved up on a ground out.Â
Santo Guinta reached via HBP and Weisensee singled to right to make it 8-1. Guinta scored on a wild pitch and the Cougars led 9-1 after six innings.
Lennon's bases-loaded double keyed a five-run seventh inning as the Cougars took a 14-1 lead.
