The Misericordia University baseball team split a doubleheader at Eastern, Saturday.
The Cougars took the opener, 9-4, but dropped the nightcap, 4-2.
Kenny Jarema,
Parker Abate and
Sean Boylan all had two hits in the opener and
Brady Madden drove in three runs.
Tom Jacob struck out seven over six innings to earn the win and
Kyle Rogalski pitched a scoreless seventh.
Tyler Holzapfel had two hits in the nightcap.
Kyle Melahn struck out seven in three shutout innings of relief.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first of the opener. Jarema singled and moved to second on Abate's single. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Madden followed with a sacrifice fly.
Abate reached on an error with one out in the top of the third and stole second. Madden walked and both runners moved up on back-to-back passed balls to give MU a 2-0 lead. Madden scored to make it 3-0 when Holzapfel reached on an error.
After Eastern got two runs back in the bottom of the third, MU answered with four runs in the top of the fourth.
Boylan walked, stole second, went to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-2. Abate walked and came around on
Steve Weisensee's double to left center. Madden followed with a two-run homer to give the Cougars a 7-2 lead.
In game two, Eastern took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
The Cougars got two back in the top of the fourth when Madden and Holzapfel both scored on passed balls, but the Eagles added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame.
Misericordia is 16-7 overall and 7-2 in the MAC Freedom and will host Scranton, Wednesday at Tambur Field.
