The Misericordia University baseball team's comeback fell short as they fell to Baldwin Wallace, 8-7, Monday night in Port Charlotte, FL.
Dalton Emerich led the squad with two RBI on three hits and a run scored.
Steve Weisensee and
Kenny Jarema also contributed three hits while Weisensee added an RBI and two runs scored.
First-year pitcher
Isaac Snyder kept the Cougars in the game with five solid innings of relief. Snyder allowed one unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts.
Baldwin Wallace jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the second inning and five in the fourth.
The Cougars got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-out rally. After opening the inning with consecutive strikeouts, Weisensee worked a walk to prolong the frame. Emerich then singled to left field, which advanced both runners into scoring position after a Yellow Jackets' error.
Hughes kept the rally going with a double down the left field line to plate Weisensee and Emerich. However, the Cougars would leave Hughes stranded in scoring position to end the inning.
Misericordia added another run in the sixth inning to pull within four runs. Holzapfel led off the frame with a single through the right side and advanced to third base on a Weisensee single.
Emerich then brought home Holzapfel with a single to center field to make it a 7-3 game. The Cougars had a chance for more runs with two runners in scoring position and one out, but couldn't capitalize on the opportunity.
After the Yellow Jackets got a run back in the top of the eighth, Weisensee sparked another two-out rally in the bottom half of the inning.
The senior outfielder got things started with a double down the left field line, then Emerich drove him home with a single through the left side to make it an 8-4 game.
Misericordia brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning when they loaded up the bases with no outs.
Conor Smith and
Parker Abate were both hit by pitches while Jarema singled to second base.
The Cougars plated one run on a sacrifice fly by
Santo Guinta and added another with an RBI single from Weisensee. Moments later, Abate came home on a failed pickoff attempt to pull within one. However, the Cougars' rally fell short as they stranded the baserunner in scoring position to end the game.
The 14
th ranked Cougars fell to 4-4 on the season while Baldwin Wallace improved to 3-2. Misericordia will be back in action tomorrow against Moravian College at noon.
