Shane Hughes had four hits and drove in six runs and
Brandon Smith had four hits as the Misericordia University baseball team opened a series with Delaware Valley with a 22-4 win, Thursday.
Kenny Jarema had three hits and three RBI and became the fifth player in school history to reach the 200-hit plateau.
Parker Abate,
Sean Lyons and
Billy Kerwien all had two hits and
Brady Madden and
Santo Guinta both drove in two runs.
Ian McCole struck out five in five innings to earn the win.
Dalton Emerich allowed just one run in three innings and
Dom Farole struck out two in a perfect ninth.
The Cougars scored eight runs as they batted around in the top of the first inning.Â
Brady Madden singled in a pair of runs and Hughes had a two-run double and scored on an error to make it 5-0. Jarema had a two-run double in his second at bat of the inning and Abate closed out the scoring with an RBI-double.
Kerwien singled in a run in the second and
Conor Smith added a sacrifice fly to give the Cougars a 10-0 lead.
Misericordia added seven runs in the sixth on RBI-infield singles by Kerwien and
Joe Liscio and singles by
Kyle Davenport and Jarema. Lyons had a two-run double to center and Guinta drove in a run with a sac fly to make it 17-1.
Smith led off the ninth with a single and Lyons and Guinta sandwiched two-out walks around Davenport's hit-by-pitch before Hughes cleared the bases with a grand slam.
Misericordia improved to 27-10 overall and 14-5 in the MAC Freedom.
