York, PA – The Misericordia University women's lacrosse team's season came to an end with a 17-8 loss to York College in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Sunday afternoon at Kinsley Field.
Kaila Quinlivan led the way for the Cougars with a hat trick and one assist, collecting a point on all three of Misericorida's final goals.
Lauren Weitzel continued her impressive postseason run with two goals, extending her NCAA Tournament goal total to a team-high six tallies.
Kristen Ritter,
Emily Connell and
Shae O'Leary also added one goal, each coming in the second half.
Weitzel netted the game's opening goal for the second straight contest. After
Brianna Ladner controlled the opening draw, the Cougars showed patience on offense and found Weitzel in front of the net, who bounced the ball past the Spartans' goalie for the score, 1-0.
The Cougars stood strong on their first defensive stand, forcing a Spartans' turnover. However, Devin Hursey provided the equalizer on York's following offensive set. The Spartans then took the lead with 23:09 remaining when Celly Arthur passed out of a free position and found Regan Cook to the left of the goal to take a 2-1 lead.
Moments later,
Maggie McGovern made a fantastic save to stop the Spartans on a free position. Hursey charged the net and attempted to play the ball high, but was denied by the first-year goalie. York then passed out of a free position and scored off a one-timer on the Spartans' ensuing attack, 3-1.
With 18:07 remaining in the first half, the Spartans connected on their fourth unanswered goal to take a 4-1 lead, which prompted the Cougars to take their first timeout. However, York maintained momentum and added three more unanswered goals, 7-1.
Quinlivan ended the Spartans' rally with a much-needed score off a free position from center, 7-2. During Misericordia's next attack, Quinlivan nearly added consecutive tallies, but fired a shot just wide.
After York added four unanswered goals, Weitzel tallied her second score of the half to cut the Cougars' deficit to 11-3. The sophomore midfielder muscled her way through traffic and beat the goalie low with a rip from center for her sixth goal of the NCAA Tournament.
The Spartans added two more goals before halftime to take a 13-3 lead. York outshot Misericordia 19-9 with 17 shots on goal in the opening stanza.
Following four unanswered goals by the Spartans, Ritter netted the Cougars' first goal of the second half. The senior carried the ball from midfield and charged through York's defense to make it a 17-4 game with 15:11 remaining.
Later in the half, O'Leary had an excellent opportunity on a one-timer attempt with a man down. The junior attacker ripped a shot low from center and drew a foul to earn a free position. O'Leary then connected on the ensuing free position, beating the goalie high for the Cougars' second straight goal.
Moments later, Quinlivan provided her second tally of the afternoon to make it 17-6. Following a Spartan timeout, the junior attacker then found Connell on a beautiful centering feed for the team's fourth unanswered goal, 17-7.
The Cougars maintained momentum as Quinlivan collected a hat trick for her 67th goal of the season with 1:22 remaining. Misericordia finished strong, scoring the last five goals of the afternoon.
Misericordia ends the season with a 15-6 record while York improves to 16-5 overall. The Spartans will advance to the next round of the NCAA Tournament to battle St. John Fisher.
