MU Women's Soccer Downs Cortland to Move to 2-0

The sixth-ranked Misericordia University women's soccer team earned an impressive 3-1 win over Cortland, Tuesday night at Mangelsdorf Field.

The Cougars scored three goals in a 33-minute span in the middle of the first half to overcome an early deficit and improve to 2-0.

Jordyn Martini had a goal and an assist and Kate Field and Madelyn Uetz both added goals.

After Cortland opened the scoring on a 35-yard blast in the second minute, the Cougars took control and held the Red Dragons to just one shot on goal the rest of the way.

Misericordia utilized excellent ball movement to notch the tying goal in the 10th minute.

Kendall Pearage controlled the ball on the left wing and laid a pass across the box to a charging Field who slotted a ball inside the left post at 9:41.

The Cougars kept the pressure on and eventually went in front in the 23rd minute.  Jeanna Orfanos won a scramble for a loose ball near the left post and centered a pass to Martini who touched the ball into the right corner for a 2-1 lead at 22:50.

Misericordia nearly made it 3-1 eight minutes later when Martini made a nice move on the left wing and found Ally Waite near the top of the box, but her shot sailed just over the crossbar.

MU did add an insurance goal on a corner when Martini found Uetz in stride from the top of the box and she one-timed a shot into the right corner for a 3-1 lead at 34:02.

The Cougars had a couple of solid chances to add to their lead in the second half.

In the 54th minute, Ally Waite gathered a loose ball off a corner, but her shot from 15 yards out was just over the bar.

Michaela Fasolino's blast from 35 yards was denied on a diving save near the right post in the 76th minute.

The Cougars had 20-5 advantage in shots and held a 7-2 edge in corners.

Misericordia will host Kean, Friday at 7:00.
