MU Softball Opens With Sweep

The Misericordia University softball team opened the season with a pair of wins at Shenandoah, 4-0, 2-1.
 
In the opener, Brooke Moyle struck out nine while allowing just two hits over six innings and Alexa McHugh tossed one scoreless inning in her collegiate debut.
 
Miranda Bohn had two doubles and two RBI Kiersten Pflueger drove in a run.
 
Bohn scattered seven hits and had six strikeouts to earn the complete-game win in the nightcap.
 
Ciara DeLong and Amanda Butera both had two hits and drove in a run.
 
In game one, Butera led off the third inning with a single to left center and moved to second when Maddie Holub walked.
 
After a sac bunt by Pflueger, Bohn doubled to center to drive in two runs.  Bohn advanced to third on Moyle's infield single and Brianna Holder followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.
 
The Cougars added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.
 
Pinch-hitter Megan Fenstermaker drew a lead-off walk and took second on a wild pitch.  Fenstermaker moved to third on a ground out and came home on Pflueger's single to left.
 
In the nightcap, the Cougars scored both of their runs in the top of the fifth inning.
 
With one out, Holder single to right field and moved to second on Megan Murphy's single to left field.
 
DeLong singled through the left side to drive in a run and both runners moved up on the throw to the plate.
 
Butera singled to right to make it 2-0.
 
Shenandoah cut the lead in half with a two-out in the bottom of the fifth.
 
The Hornets put the potential tying run on with a lead-off single in the sixth, but Bohn retired the next six batters to end the game.
