Effinger Lifts MU Over Wilkes in MAC Freedom Finale

The Misericordia University field hockey team wrapped up its MAC Freedom schedule with a 2-1 win at Wilkes, Wednesday.
 
Anna Effinger scored the game-winning goal late in the third quarter to lead the Cougars to their third straight win.
 
MU improved to 12-5 overall and finished tied for first in the MAC Freedom. 
 
Elizabeth Fry game the Cougars the lead midway through the first quarter with an assist from Madison Posivak, who recorded a point for the fifth straight game.
 
Misericordia earned four corners in a three-minute span and finally converted on the fourth to take the lead with 8:47 to play in the opening quarter.
 
The Cougars put five more shots on goal over the final 6:30 and ended the first quarter with an 11-1 advantage in shots.
 
Wilkes pulled even early in the third quarter, but the Cougars capitalized on another corner to go back in front with 3:24 to play in the period.
 
Allie Bianco had the assist on the game-winner.
 
Olivia Gretz had three saves to earn the win in goal.
 
MU will visit Ramapo for the regular season finale, Saturday.
 
The Cougars are the second seed and will host FDU-Florham in the MAC Freedom semifinals, Wednesday.
