Top-Ranked Cougars Set for Sweet 16

The top-ranked Misericordia University women's soccer team will face number four William Smith in the NCAA Sweet 16, Saturday at 3:30 at the University of Scranton.

Number 11 Scranton will take on second-ranked TCNJ in the opener at 1:00.  The winners will meet in the Elite 8, Sunday at 3:00.

Misericordia, 20-1, has won 12 straight games and tied the school record for wins in a season while playing one of the toughest schedules in the nation.

MU is making its fourth trip to the Sweet 16 in 13 NCAA Tournament appearances.  The Cougars advanced to Elite 8 in 2018 and reached the Final Four in 2012.

Saturday's match is the fourth meeting between Misericordia and William Smith and the first in the postseason.  The teams were 1-1-1 in a three-year series from 2017-2019.

Misericordia ranks fourth in the nation with 3.95 goals per game while William Smith is sixth at 3.78.

The Cougars are 25th in the nation with a .471 goals against average while the Herons are 29th at .489.

MAC Freedom Rookie of the Year Emma Sweitzer (22g, 12a) leads Misericordia in scoring after setting a school single-season record for goals and tying the school record with 56 points.

MAC Freedom Player of the Year Kaylee Sturans (15g, 8a) is second on the team with 38 points and teams with Sweitzer to form the second-highest scoring tandem in the nation.

Michaela Fasolino (12g, 5a) adds 29 points while Madison Brdaric (6g, 8a) and Kate Field (7g, 6a) add 20 points each.

Goalkeeper Alexis Benedetto has tied the school record with 20 wins.  Her .32 goals against average in the best in school history while her 10 shutouts in third- in school history.

William Smith, 18-1-1, won 17 straight games since a 4-2 loss to Messiah.  The Herons are making their fifth consecutive appearance in the Sweet 16.

Julia Keogh (21g, 6a) leads the Herons with 48 points while Sheila McQuillen (10g, 10a) adds 30 points.

Amanda Kesler is 15-1 in goal with six shutouts and a 0.53 goals against average.
