Mary Washington Pulls Away Late to Down MU Women

Mary Washington closed the game on an 11-0 run to defeat Misericordia University, 68-52, in the opening round of the Montclair State Holiday Tournament, Wednesday.

Nora Tracey's jumper got the Cougars within 57-52 with 3:08 to play, but Mary Washington scored 11 straight points over the final 2:47 to clinch the win.

Alyssa Bondi led the Cougars with 14 points and Tracey added seven points and four rebounds.

The teams went back-and-forth throughout most of the contest with six lead changes and five ties.

Down 44-37 midway through the third quarter, Bondi's pull-up jumper and a free throw from Skylar Dowling made it 44-40.

With Mary Washington up 48-42, Jordan Postiglione made a lay-up and Dowling hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 48-47 with less than a minute to play in the period.

Mary Washington added two free throws to lead 50-47 after three quarters.

Morgan Haefele hit a three-pointer three minutes into the fourth quarter, but the Cougars made just one field goal the rest of the way.

Bondi followed two free throws from Melina Santacroce with a jumper to give MU a 10-6 lead late in the opening quarter, but MW rallied to take a 12-11 lead at the end of the period.

The Cougars used a 17-6 run over the final 3:55 of the second quarter to take a 34-33 halftime lead.

Samantha Hardy opened the run with a short jumper and Elizabeth Fasti followed with a three-pointer to get within 26-22 with 3:32 to go.

Bondi added a three-pointer and Tracey scored four straight points to tie the game, 29-29, with 1:37 to play.

Jocelyn Grosch scored five points in the final minute to give MU the lead at intermission.

The Cougars will face Neumann in the consolation game, Thursday at 2:00.
