Weitzel Leads MU Women's Lax Over Albright

Lauren Weitzel scored eight goals to lead the Misericordia University women's lacrosse team to an 18-6 win over Albright, Saturday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.

Michelle Torzilli had three goals and an assist and Alyssa Delgadillo added two goals and an assist.

Molly Celesky scored twice.

Weitzel added two assists, 10 draw controls, five caused turnovers and five ground balls.

Torzilli had six draw controls and Emily Connell added a goal, three ground balls, two caused turnovers and a draw control.

Maggie McGovern made eight saves in goal for the Cougars.

With the Cougars trailing 4-3 midway through the first half, Weitzel scooped up a ground ball near midfield and raced down the middle of the field before finding Torzilli for the game-tying goal at 15:22.

Weitzel put the Cougars ahead for good five minutes later when she forced a turnover deep in the Albright end and scored an empty-net goal for a 6-5 lead with 10:29 to play in the first half.

Torzilli made it 6-4 when she took a pass from Connell near the right post and placed a shot into the top left corner.

After the teams exchanged goals, Johnson found Delgadillo in stride in front of the net with 1:26 left in the first half to give the Cougars an 8-5 lead.

The Cougars took control of the game with four straight goals to open the second half.

Connell stuffed a shot from the left post and Delgadillo followed with a free position goal to make it 10-5.

Two minutes later, Weitzel took a pass from Torzilli, juked a defender and placed a shot under the bar to make it 11-5.

Weitzel won the ensuing draw control and connected with Taylor Hannaberry on the left wing where she whipped a shot inside the right post to put MU ahead, 12-5, less than five minutes into the second half.

After an Albright goal, the Cougars closed the game on a 6-0 run to improve to 2-0.
