The Misericordia University men's volleyball team dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision at Widener, Wednesday night.
The Cougars took the first two sets, 25-18, 25-18, but Widener rallied to win three straight, 25-16, 25-20, 15-13.
Anthony DePalma led the Cougars with 18 kills and three blocks while
Billy Murphy added 11 kills and five aces.
Connor Cusick and
Matt Lavin had eight kills each and
Dylan Sellitti had 50 assists and three aces.
Down 7-4 in the first set, the Cougars scored three straight points, including a pair of aces by Murphy, to pull even.
A kill by DePalma and an ace by
Matt Churchill coupled with two Widener errors gave the Cougars a 17-11 lead.
Two kills from DePalma and an ace from Sellitti helped the Cougars close out a 25-18 win.
MU fell behind early in the second set, but kills from Lavin and Sellitti sandwiched two aces by Murphy as the Cougars took a 9-6 lead.
Lavin had back-to-back kills to help the Cougars take an 18-14 lead and
Brian Ross' ace capped a 4-0 run to make it 24-17.
Cusick's kill closed out the 25-18 win.
Widener never trailed enroute to a 25-16 win the third set.
The Cougars led 17-16 in the fourth set, but Widener scored three straight points and went on to win 25-20.
DePalma's kill gave MU a 1-0 lead in the finale, but Widener rallied and eventually took an 11-7 lead.
Caleb Bauder had a kill and an ace as the Cougars got within 11-10.
Kills by Murphy and Lavin along with a Widener error helped the Cougars tie the score, 13-13.
Widener scored the final two points to clinch the comeback.
