The Misericordia University men's volleyball team split a doubleheader against sixth-ranked Stevens, Saturday afternoon on Doc Mould Court.
The Cougars won the opener, 3-1 (31-29, 17-25, 25-22, 25-20), but dropped the final match (18-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 13-15). Â
Anthony DePalma led MU in the opener with 13 kills, three blocks and two aces. Brian Ross also added 13 kills, 10 digs and one ace while Matt Lavin tallied 10 kills and three blocks. Â
Dylan Sellitti totaled 50 assists and 10 digs while Conner Westerfield contributed 14 digs. Â
In the second match, Ross racked up 19 kills, 11 digs and four digs while Austin Cervasio was a force in the middle with 10 kills and five blocks. Â
Sellitti had 49 assists.
In the first match Stevens, had four opportunities to win the opening set, but two key kills by Ross allowed MU to take the set, 31-29. Â
Misericordia struggled to find their rhythm in the second set after Stevens went on a 7-0 run to take 21-13 lead. Â
Stevens opened the door for the Cougars in the third set and Misericordia went on 6-2 run in the middle of the set to take a 15-12 lead. Â
The final set of the opener was neck-and-neck until DePalma started a 5-1 run to put MU up 16-12. Â
In the nightcap, MU lost the first set despite a five-point run courtesy of three Ross kills. Â
Cervasio came up big at the end of the second set with two kills to help seal the win.
Set three looked to be secured early by Misericordia, but a 7-1 run by Stevens shifted the momentum. MU tried to close the gap late with a 4-1 run but fell short, 25-22. Â
The fourth set saw two early runs by both teams, but the Cougars maintained the lead to force a fifth. Â
Down 12-8 in the finale, MU scored three straight points to get within 14-13, but Stevens held on for the win. Â
Misericordia will travel Wilkes, Wednesday at 7 p.m. Â
