The Misericordia University softball team swept a doubleheader from King's, 6-2, 15-12, Saturday on Senior Appreciation Day at Anderson Field. Seniors
Maddie Holub, Bri Holder and
Amanda Butera combined for seven hits, 10 runs and six RBI.
Kiersten Pflueger was also recognized prior to the game.
In the opener,
Alexa McHugh struck out six to earn the win and helped her own cause with a bases-loaded triple.
Zariah Alvin and
Megan Fenstermaker had two hits and an RBI while Butera drew three walks became MU's all-time stolen base leader.
In game two, Holub hit two homers, scored five runs and drove in three runs.
Nicole Elliott and Holder had three hits and three RBI each.
Emily Wenner picked up the win with 2.1 shutout innings of relief.
In the opener, King's took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and the Cougars tied it in the second.
Butera drew a lead-off walk and moved up on a fielder's choice before coming home on Fenstermaker's double off the top of the fence in left center.
King's went back in front in the top of the third, but the Cougars answered with three runs in the bottom half. Holub led off with a single to center and
Kaitlin Redling and Butera drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. McHugh lined a double to the wall in left center to give the Cougars a 4-2 lead.
Butera walked to open the bottom of the fifth and became MU's all-time leader with her 48
th career stolen base.
The Cougars added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth. Fenstermaker singled to center and pinch-runner
Haley McMenimen came around to score on Alvin's double off the fence in center field.
In game two, the Cougars scored in every inning.
King's took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first and the Cougars got one back on Holub's solo homer in the bottom of the inning.
MU took a 6-3 lead with five runs in the second inning.
Megan Murphy had a sacrifice fly and Elliott forced in a run on a HBP and Redling hit a three-run triple to the right center field wall.
King's scored twice in the third and the Cougars answered with a run on a double by Holder and an RBI-triple by McHugh for a 7-5 lead.
King's went up 8-7 in the top of the fourth, but the Cougars regained the lead in their next at bat. Holub was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Elliott's single up the middle. Fenstermaker's sacrifice fly scored Elliott to put MU ahead 9-8.
King's went ahead 12-9 in the top of the fifth, but the Cougars tied it in the bottom of the inning on Holder's three-run triple down the right field line.
MU scored three runs with a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth for the winning margin. Alvin walked and Holub and Elliott followed with back-to-back homers for a 15-12 lead.
Wenner allowed a one-out walk in the top of the seventh, but Holub doubled the runner off first to end the game.
