The Misericordia University baseball team stayed alive at the NCAA Regional with an 11-4 win over Johns Hopkins, Saturday in St. Paul, MN.
Austin Miles had four hits and Joe Liscio had three hits, including a three-run homer. Sean Boylan, Derrick Vosburg and Brady Madden all added two hits.
Tom Jacob allowed just one earned run over 5.1 innings and Tyler Leonard worked three innings to pick up the win.
After Hopkins took a 1-0 lead in the third, the Cougars went in front with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.
Dante Salerno led off with an infield single and moved to second on Boylan's single to center. Salerno advanced to third on a double play and scored the tying run on Vosburg's infield single. Madden reached on an infield error and the Cougars took advantage as back-to-back singles by Liscio and Miles brought in Vosburg with the go-ahead run.
Salerno was hit by a pitch with one out in the fifth and Boylan singled up the middle. Owen VanNewkirk reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners and Salerno made it 3-1 on a double steal.
Hopkins got four hits and took advantage of an MU in the sixth to pull even, but the Cougars broke the game open with five runs in the top of the seventh.
Shane Hughes was hit by a pitch to lead off the seventh and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Salerno. Following a pitching change, Hughes went to third on a ground out and put the Cougars in front, 4-3, on VanNewkirk's line drive single to center.
Pinch-runner Kyle Lennon stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Vosburg ran the count full before lining a single to center to give the Cougars a 5-3 lead. Madden followed with an infield single and Liscio blasted a three-run homer to left to make in 8-3.
Hopkins got a run back in the bottom of the frame on a two-out solo homer.Â
The Cougars went 1-2-3 in the eighth. The Blue Jays got a lead-off double in the bottom of the eighth, but Leonard got two quick outs and Miles made a nice play to his left to end the inning.
Misericordia added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Pinch-hitter Dalton Emerich reached on an infield error to lead off the top of the ninth for the Cougars. After a sacrifice bunt, Madden doubled off the wall in right to make it 9-4. Liscio followed with a single down the right field line and raced all the way to third on an error to give the Cougars a 10-4 lead. Miles laced a 2-2 pitch off the pitcher's mound for an RBI-ground out and an 11-4 lead.
Madden made a nice play behind the bag at second base for the first out of the ninth and Matthew Lanzendorfer came on to get the last two outs.
The Cougars improved to 30-9 and will face Aurora in an elimination game, Sunday at 3:30 (EST).
