MU Women's Soccer Suffers First Loss

The Misericordia University women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, 1-0, to Scranton in a battle of nationally-ranked teams, Wednesday night at Mangelsdorf Field.

Scranton's Teresa Hegarty scored the game's only goal less than five minutes into the second half.

Alexis Benedetto made six saves in goal for MU while Amanda Steinberg had six saves to record the shutout for Scranton.

Misericordia had a 19-11 advantage in shots and took 10 corners while allowing just two.

The teams traded possession in the midfield for the opening 10 minutes before Kaylee Sturans took the game's first shot, which sailed wide right at 11:45.

Misericordia began to control the play through the middle of the first half, but was unable to convert.

Scranton took advantage of a deflection in the box and got a shot off from 12 yards out, but Benedetto came off her line to make the save near the left post.

The rebound went across the box, but Benedetto was able to scramble to her feet and deny another shot to keep the game scoreless.

After falling behind, the Cougars had a few solid chances, but were unable to pull even.

Julia Beck one-timed a shot off corner in front, but was denied in the 68th minute.

Kate Fields' shot from 25 yards out rolled wide left in the 70th minute.

Ally Waite settled a ball near the top of the box, but her shot was just high in the 73rd minute.

Kaylee Sturans gave the Cougars one last hope, but her shot from 30 yards out was covered near the left post.

Seventh-ranked Misericordia fell to 8-1 while Scranton, #24, improved to 8-0.
