The Misericordia University men's basketball dropped a heartbreaking 75-74 decision to NYU, Wednesday night on Doc Mould Court.

Bobby Hawkinson made a three-pointer at the buzzer to cap a 32-point night and help the Violets improve to 9-1.

Derek Smith and Kevin Lazdowsky led MU with 14 points each and Nick Hornung added 10 points.

Trailing 72-69 with less than a minute to play, Lazdowsky drilled a three-pointer from the right corner to pull MU even.

The Cougars got a stop on the next possession and Lazdowsky found Hornung on the left block for the go-ahead lay-up with 3.7 to play.

Hawkinson banked in the game-winner from the top of the key just prior to the horn.

The game was tight throughout with neither team leading by more than seven points.

MU grabbed an early 10-4 lead when Lazdowsky found Smith in the left corner for three and Smith returned the favor to Lazdowsky on the left wing less than four minutes into the game.

Jake Bartholomew made a pair of three-pointers as the Cougars built their biggest lead of the night, 25-18, with 7:54 to play in the first half.

NYU rallied to take a 37-35 lead with less than a minute to go, but Joe Baldachino drained a three-pointer from the right wing to beat the shot clock and MU back in front, 38-37, with 10 seconds left.

After the Violets took a 67-55 lead midway through the second half, MU answered with seven straight points.  Baldachino hit a three-pointer from in front of the MU bench and Hornung finished on the left block.

Chris Robinson buried a pull-up jumper from the foul line to tie the game, 62-62, with 7:26 to play.

Down 70-66, Smith rattled in a three-pointer from the left wing with 2:02 to go.

The Violets beat the shot clock to take a 72-69 lead with 1:14 remaining before Lazdowsky and Hornung put the Cougars ahead.
