The Misericordia University men's soccer season came to a heartbreaking end with a penalty kick shootout loss to Lycoming in the MAC Freedom semifinals, Thursday night at Mangelsdorf Field.
The teams battled to a 1-1 draw after regulation and were tied 2-2 after two overtime periods.
Playing a man down for the final five minutes of regulation and the two overtime periods, the Cougars got shorthanded goals from
Luke Ferrarese and
Anthony Yarabinee to force the shootout.
Locked in a defensive struggle throughout, Lycoming just missed the left post in the 60
th minute, but headed home a corner kick for a 1-0 lead just four minutes later.
The Cougars took advantage of a corner and fired multiple close range shots in the 88
th minute before Ferrarese buried a rebound from six yards out to tie score, 1-1, at 87:21.
Lycoming went back in front late in the first overtime and led 2-1 with less than four minutes remaining in the second OT.
Off a re-start near midfield,
Alexei King played a long ball to Yarabinee in the left corner and he rolled a perfectly placed left-footed shot inside the left post to pull the Cougars even at 106:49.
Both teams converted on their first two penalty kicks and both keepers made saves on the third attempt.
The fourth and fifth shooters converted for both teams to force sudden death and Lycoming's keeper made a save on MU's sixth shooter to set up the winning kick for the Warriors.
Andrew Daubenspeck made five saves in goal for Misericordia, who finished 11-3-5.
