Joe Valenti and two relievers combined for 12 strikeouts to lead the Misericordia University baseball team to a 7-5 win at Gwynedd Mercy, Wednesday.
Valenti struck out eight while scattering five hits over seven innings.Â
Matthew Lanzendorfer struck out two in a scoreless eighth and
Isaac Snyder struck out two in a perfect ninth to earn the save.
Santino Manganella had three hits and
Brady Madden had two hits and two RBI.
Derrick Vosburg had two hits and
Brendan Gray added a sacrifice fly.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Manganella doubled with one out and eventually scored on an error.
Down 2-1, the Cougars went back in front in the top of the fourth.
Madden singled and went to third on Vosburg's single. Madden scored the tying run on an error and
Brock Bollinger put MU in front with a sacrifice fly.
Gwynedd Mercy scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Cougars answered with three runs in their next at bat.
Garrett McIlhenney reached via hit by pitch and moved up on Manganella's single. Madden put the Cougars back in front with a two-run double and Vosburg's run-scoring single made it 6-4.
Gwynedd Mercy pulled within a run on a solo homer in the fifth, but the Cougars closed out the scoring with an insurance run in the sixth.
Joe Comins and Bollinger reached on errors to open the inning and Gray made it 7-5 with a sac fly.
Misericordia will open its MAC Freedom schedule at Wilkes, Friday.
