Austin Miles drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 10
th-inning to lift the Misericordia University baseball team to a 10-9 win over DeSales, Friday afternoon at Tambur Field.
Miles singled through the left side of the drawn-in infield as the Cougars won their sixth straight game to improve to 12-6 overall and 4-0 in the MAC Freedom.
Garrett McIlhenney was hit by pitch to start the game-winning rally and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Santino Manganella.Â
Brady Madden and
Derrick Vosburg were intentionally walked to set the stage for Miles.
Matthew Lanzendorfer worked the 10
th inning and recorded two of MU's 19 strikeouts to earn the win.
Trailing 9-8, the Cougars used some two-out magic to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth.Â
Owen VanNewkirk reached via hit by pitch and pinch-runner
Colin Telford raced third on
Brendan Gray's single through the right side.
Brock Bollinger reached on an error to score the tying run.
Madden hit a three-run homer in the top of the first and Vosburg followed with a solo shot to put MU up 4-0 after four batters.
Miles was hit by a pitch, stole and second and scored on Bollinger's two-out double to make it 5-0.
DeSales scored four runs in the top of the second and MU got one back in the third.
VanNewkirk doubled to right center and later scored on Gray's sacrifice fly to make it 6-4.
VanNewkirk had a two-run double in his next at-bat to give MU an 8-4 lead in the fifth.
The Bulldogs scored twice in the sixth and seventh innings to pull even and went ahead in the top of the ninth.
VanNewkirk had a team-high three hits and McIlhenney and Miles had two hits each.
Tyler Leonard and
Connor Maryniak combined for 17 strikeouts over the first nine innings before Lanzendorfer came on to pitch a perfect 10
th.
