The Misericordia University women's volleyball team opened its season with a 3-0 victory over Penn State Harrisburg, Thursday night on Doc Mould Court.
Fiona Pyfer had a team-high nine kills on 14 attempts.
Faith Merritt recorded six kills and had three aces.
Jenna Schuda had a game-high 16 assists and added eight digs and two aces in her collegiate debut.
The Cougars downed the Lions, 25-15, 25-19, 28-26.
The first point of the 2022 season came via a
Meghan Peters swing off a Schuda assist.
The Cougars scored three consecutive points to take an 8-7 lead early in the first set.
MU went on a 10-1 run midway through the set. Sarah Kelley and Schuda both contributed two kills each during the stretch. Misericordia ended the by scoring four consecutive points with two Merritt aces.
The Cougars held a tight lead to start the second set.
Shelby Hastings added a kill to stretch MU's lead to three.
A block by
Lena Eldrenkamp and
Meghan Peters made the score 15-10.
Kelly and
Rachel LoFaso contributed with aces later on in the set. MU secured the win on a 5-1 run.
The Cougars found success early in the third set, scoring the first five points.
A late rally by the Lions put Misericordia down 24-21. In crunch time,
Sadie Stockslager provided a kill to keep the team in it. Pyfer's ace on the following point saved the set for MU.
Down 25-24, Merritt delivered a huge kill to the back court to tie the set. The Cougars scored three straight to take the set and match.
Misericordia will travel to Morrisville, New York, for the Mustang tournament, tomorrow.
