MU Softball Opens League Play With Split

The Misericordia University softball team salvaged a split with Arcadia in their MAC Freedom opener, Sunday at Anderson Field.

After dropping the opener, 3-0, the Cougars took the nightcap, 7-1.

Bridget Doherty and Kaitlin Redling had the only hits for MU in the opener.

Emily Wenner scattered five hits and took a shutout into seventh inning in the nightcap.

Redling and Gianna Russo both had three hits and Emily Susanj had a three-run double.

The Cougars scored five runs in the third and added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth.

In the opener, Arcadia took a 2-0 lead with a pair of unearned runs with two outs in the top of the second.

The Cougars threatened in the bottom half, but stranded runners at the corners.

MU's best chance came in the bottom of the sixth.  Redling singled up the middle and Gianna Foreman walked.  Mackenzie Fifer walked with two outs to load the bases, but the Cougars left them loaded.

Arcadia added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

Misericordia used a five-run rally in the third inning to take control of the nightcap.  Alexa McHugh and Nicole Elliott both drew full-count walks and Redling singled up the middle to give the Cougars the lead.
Foreman walked to load the bases and Gianna Russo singled in a run to make it 2-0.  After a pitching change, Emily Susanj lined a double to left center to clear the bases and give the Cougars a 5-0 lead.

The Cougars added two runs in the bottom of the fifth and had a chance to end the game early.  Redling doubled off the fence in left to open in the inning and moved to third on Foreman's single through the left side.

Russo doubled in a run and Brittany Burd reached on a bunt single.  One out later, Zariah Alvin coaxed a 3-2 walk to make it 7-0, but Arcadia escaped the jam to stay alive.

Wenner cruised until giving up a two-out single in front of home plate and a double to left center in the top of the seventh.

Elliot made two diving stops in the hole at second base and made a diving catch to her right on a line drive to end the game.
