The Misericordia University baseball team used solid outings from
Max Oliver and
Brendan Gray to sweep a doubleheader over Wilkes, Sunday at Tambur Field.
Oliver threw a two-hitter in a 4-1 win in the opener and Gray scattered four hits over six innings in a 14-3 win in the nightcap.
Brady Madden had two hits, including a homer, and drove in two runs in game one.Â
Garrett McIlhenney tripled and scored a run and
Brock Bollinger had an RBI.
In the nightcap,
Connor Maryniak had a three-run homer and four RBI and McIlhenney, Madden and
Derrick Vosburg all had two hits.
Misericordia answered with five in the bottom of the first and scored in each of the first five innings.
After Wilkes took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third in game one, the Cougars responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
McIlhenney tripled to right and scored the tying run on Bollinger's RBI fielder's choice. Vosburg singled to left and Bollinger advanced to third. Madden put the Cougars in front with a sacrifice fly and Comins singled through the right side with scoring on the throw to the infield.
Madden added an insurance run with a solo homer in the fifth.
Down 2-0 in the first in game two, McIlhenney led off the bottom of the first with a solo homer to ignited a five-run rally. Bollinger walked and Vosburg singled before Madden drove in a run with a single to right. Maryniak homered to dead center to give MU a 5-2 lead.
Wilkes scored one in the top of the second before Gray retired 11 straight Colonels.
The Cougars took advantage of a wild pitch and a two-out error to make it 6-3 in the bottom of the second.
Three straight two-out singles plated a run in the third and another error led to a run for an 8-3 lead.
Madden beat out a slow roller behind the mound to start the fourth and moved to third on a stolen base and throwing error. Maryniak's sac fly made it 9-3.
With two outs in the fifth, seven straight Cougars reached base to fuel a five-run rally and extend the lead to 14-3.
The Cougars improved to 18-5 overall and 7-2 in the MAC Freedom and will host DeSales, Tuesday.
