The Misericordia University baseball team advanced to the winner's bracket final of the NCAA Regional Tournament with a 10-7 win over Washington & Jefferson, Saturday at Tambur Field.
Jason Sanfilippo had three hits and two RBI and
Derrick Vosburg hit a long two-run homer.Â
Jack Regenye had three hits and
Brock Bollinger had two hits and scored twice.
Tyler Leonard worked 3.1 innings of relief to earn the win and
Connor Maryniak struck out two in the ninth to pick up his first save.
After falling behind 3-0 in the top of the second, the Cougars scored seven runs over the next three innings.
Maryniak led off the bottom of the second with a walk and moved up on a ground out and Sanfilippo's single to center. Regenye drove in MU's first run with a hit-and-run single and McIlhenney followed with a sacrifice fly to get the Cougars within a run, 3-2.
The Cougars went in front with three runs in the third. Bollinger singled through the middle and Vosburg blasted the first pitch over the right field fence to give MU a 4-3 lead. Comins reached on an infield single and eventually scored on Sanfilippo's single to left to make it 5-3.
The Cougars stretched the lead to 7-3 with a pair of runs in the fourth. McIlhenney and Bollinger hit back-to-back doubles to the left center field gap and Bollinger later scored on a squeeze bunt by Comins.
The Presidents pulled within 7-6 in the seventh, but the Cougars answered with three runs in the bottom half.Â
Brendan Gray was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Sanfilippo's single inside the left field line. Regenye reached on a bunt single and both runners moved up on a throwing error. Sanfilippo and Regenye scored on back-to-back wild pitches to make it 10-6.
The Cougars are 34-12 and will face top-seeded Salve Regina in the winner's bracket final, Sunday at 12:00 at Tambur Field.
