The Misericordia University baseball team opened the postseason with a 4-3 win over DeSales in the opening game of the MAC Freedom semifinals, Saturday afternoon at Tambur Field.
The Cougars stole five bases as part of a four-run third inning.
Brock Bollinger had two hits and drove in a run and
Jason Sanfilippo added two hits.
David McCurry scattered seven hits over five innings to earn the win and
Tyler Leonard worked four scoreless innings to pick up the save.
DeSales put the first two runners on base to start the game, but McCurry got back-to-back strikeouts and induced a grounder to first to end the frame.
After turning a pair of 643 double plays in the second and third innings, the Cougars scored stole five bases to fuel a four-run rally in the bottom of the third.
Sanfilippo blooped a single into short right center to start the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After Sanfilippo got a huge jump to steal third, McIlhenney walked to reach base for the 41
st straight game and stole second.
Bollinger dropped an RBI-double just inside the right field line to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
Derrick Vosburg's sacrifice fly made it 2-0.
Bollinger stole third and Madden was hit by a pitch and stole second before
Joe Comins beat out a slow roller to third to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead.
Comins stole second and Madden came home on a throwing error for the final run.
DeSales got three runs back in the top of the fifth, but Leonard came on in the sixth and shut the door over the final four innings.
The teams will meet again Sunday at noon at Tambur Field.
