The #6 Misericordia University women's soccer team took down King's in dominant fashion with a 6-0 victory in their MAC Freedom match, Friday night at Mangelsdorf Field.
Â
After scoring in the first minute, the Cougars put three more goals on the board before halftime. They tacked on two more in the second half on their way to a decisive victory over their conference opponent.
Â
MU wasted no time getting on the board as
Madison Brdaric picked up a pass from
Julia Beck and chipped a shot past the Monarchs' goalkeeper to take a 1-0 lead at 0:57.Â
Â
Lauren Mondor faced her first test of the night at 3:20 when she smothered a long-distance shot to preserve the one-goal advantage.
Â
The Brdaric/Beck duo connected again at 10:08 to double the Cougars' lead. After fighting through a pair of King's defenders, Brdaric centered a pass to Beck, who delivered a one-timer to the back of the net.
Â
Shortly after the 2-0 marker, MU was awarded back-to-back corners. On the second attempt,
Haleigh Wintersteen took the kick and sent a short pass to Brdaric. The senior forward immediately returned the ball to Wintersteen, who lofted a shot over the Monarch keeper to the upper left portion of the goal. The 3-0 goal, which came at 12:29, marked the third time Brdaric factored into the scoresheet.
Â
Mondor stood tall once again in the 16th minute following a King's corner. The Cougar keeper snagged a ball out of the air, turning aside a shot from the top of the box to keep the visitors off the board.
Â
Lily Heistand had a golden scoring opportunity at 26:05, as she found herself in alone against the goalie and rang the right goalpost. Shortly thereafter,
Emma Sweitzer and
Brenna Field were both robbed from in-close following a corner kick for MU.
Â
Sweitzer nearly beat the King's goalkeeper in the 39th minute, but her shot to the bottom left corner of the goal was stopped by a diving save.
Â
With less than a minute remaining in the first half, a downfield pass caught the Monarch defense off guard and allowed
Sabrina Competiello to cut to the inner portion of the box. She booted a ball that sailed over the keeper's outstretched right arm to give Misericordia a 4-0 advantage heading into halftime.Â
Â
The Cougars continued to press the King's defense at the start of the second half, eventually leading to another corner. On the attempt,
Brenna Field centered the ball to a leaping
Esabella Mendola, who headed the ball to the back of the net. Field's goal at 66:48 gave MU a five-goal lead.Â
Â
Misericordia dominated the neutral zone, quickly reclaiming the ball whenever King's began to generate momentum.Â
Â
As the second half ticked toward its end,
Sarah Kowalski delivered a beautiful cross to a charging
Nikki Bell. Bell buried her shot at 89:26 to secure her first collegiate goal and give MU a late 6-0 lead.Â
Â
The score would hold for the remaining 34 seconds as the Cougars clinched their third MAC Freedom victory to remain perfect in conference play.
Â
Brdaric led the way with a goal and a pair of assists. Wintersteen recorded three shots on goal for MU and Mondor made two saves in the win.
Â
The Cougars return to action when they travel to Delaware Valley University, Tuesday at 7:00.
