The Misericordia University men's soccer season came to a heartbreaking end in a sudden death shootout at DeSales in the MAC Freedom semifinals, Tuesday.
Patrick Sipera scored the lone goal for the Cougars with an assist from
Max Jamieson.
Santino Jannotte made seven saves in goal.
The Cougars had the first opportunity off a throw-in near midfield in the 12
th minute.Â
Richard Billings received a ball outside the left edge of the box before centering a pass to Sipera whose one-timer was wide right.
After DeSales took a 1-0 lead at 17:15, the Cougars answered six minutes later. Jamieson carried down the left side and dribbled through three defenders before rolling a pass across the top of the box where Sipera chopped a shot back inside the left post to the score, 1-1, at 23:21.
The Cougars nearly took the lead early in the second half off a re-start from 35 yards out. The service was punched out by the Bulldogs' keeper and
Shane Macko's chip shot deflected off the top left corner of the crossbar.
MU dominated play over the last 15 minutes of regulation and Macko's shot from point-blank range near the right post was denied in the 88
th minute.
Jannotte made a point-blank near the right post in the second OT to send the game to a shootout.
Both teams converted on their first five attempts to force sudden death.
DeSales' keeper made the stop on MU's sixth kicker and the Bulldogs converted their attempt to advance to the MAC Freedom championship match.
