MU Sweeps on Day Two of Cougar Kickoff Classic

The Misericordia University men's volleyball won a pair of matches on the second day of the Cougars Kickoff Classic, Saturday.

MU swept Drew, 3-0, and used a fourth-set rally to down Rutgers-Newark, 3-1.

Anthony DePalma and Jared Piontkowski were named to the all-tournament team.

DePalma had nine kills and two aces to lead the Cougars against Drew.

Zane Martin had four blocks and Gannon DeFrain had 29 assists.

DePalma had 12 kills and two aces against Rutgers-Newark and Piontkowski added 11 kills.

DeFrain had 33 assists and Ben Clendening had four blocks while Alex Furlong added 10 digs.

DePalma had a kill and an ace to start a 6-2 run to close out a 25-19 win over in the opening set against Drew.

The Cougars took advantage of five straight Drew errors to take a 20-13 lead in the second set.

In the finale, Logan Romeika had two kills to key a 5-1 spurt to clinch a 25-17 win.

DeFrain had back-to-back aces to give the Cougars a 22-16 lead in the opener against Rutgers-Newark and DePalma added an ace to close out the 25-17 win.

R-N scored four straight points to take the second set, 25-21, but DePalma had four kills in a 6-1 spurt to seal a 25-15 win in the third set.

The Scarlet Raiders took an 18-12 lead in the fourth set, but the Cougars rallied for the win.

Piontkowski and DePalma had two kills each and a Rutgers-Newark error cut the margin to 20-18.

Piontkowski and Martin had kills to pull even, 22-22, and Jackson Fehnel eventually closed the 26-24 win with an ace.
