Softball Wins Twice Thursday

The Misericordia University softball team won a pair of games in Myrtle Beach, Thursday.

The Cougars beat Norwich, 9-0, in five innings, and beat Centenary, 12-4.

Nikki Elliott had a double and a homer and drove in five runs in the opener while Kaitlin Redling and Casey Funesti had two hits each.

Sophia DeFebo allowed three hits over four innings to get the win and Emma Griffin tossed a scoreless inning.

Bridget Dohety and Gianna Russo drew back-to-back walks and Elliott homered to give MU a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

Doherty tripled to start the second and scored on Elliott's ground out to make it 4-0.

Mackenzie Fizer walked to lead-off the third and eventually scored on Isabella Summa's RBI-grounder to stretch the lead to 5-0.

Russo reached via hit by pitch to start the fourth and came all the way around on Elliott's double to right center.  Redling singled to drive in a run and later scored on Mikayla Sasuk's single to give MU a 9-0 lead.

Against Centenary, Funesti had three hits and drove in two runs and Kaitlyn Slusser added three hits.  Redling had two hits, including a homer, and Elliott had a double and a two-run homer.

The Cougars scored eight runs over the final three innings to break open a tie game.

Elliott put MU up 6-4 with a two-run homer in the top of the fifth and Funesti added an RBI-single later in the inning.

Doherty walked, stole two bases and scored on a wild pitch in the sixth and Russo walked and eventually scored on Elliott's double to make it 9-4.

The Cougars added three runs in the seventh on two passed balls and a single by Haley McMenimen.
