Regenye Lifts Cougars Over CNU, Back to World Series

The Misericordia University baseball team clinched its second consecutive trip to the NCAA D-III World Series with a 2-1 win over Christopher Newport to sweep the Super Regional, Saturday.

Jack Regenye had two hits and accounted for both MU runs and Connor Maryniak and Matt Lanzendorfer combined for 14 strikeouts as the Cougars won their 11th straight game to improve to 38-9.

Misericordia scored both of its runs in the bottom of the first inning and Maryniak and Lanzendorfer made them stand up.  Maryniak struck out nine over seven innings to improve to 10-2 and Lanzendorfer fanned five in two innings to notch his seventh save of the year.

Garrett McIlhenney was hit by a pitch to start the first and promptly stole second and third.  Regenye lined a single to center to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.  He stole second and advanced to third on Brock Bollinger's fly to center.  Maryniak helped his own cause with an RBI-ground out to make it 2-0.

Maryniak faced the minimum through three innings thank to a 5-4-3 double play in the second.

CNU got a run back in the top of the fourth and threatened to tie the game with a one-out triple in the top of the seventh.  Maryniak answered with back-to-back strikeouts to thwart the rally.

Lanzendorfer allowed two hits in the eighth, but struck out the side to strand both runners.

The Captains put the potential tying run on second with a one-out double in the ninth, but Lanzendorfer struck out the final to batters to clinch the win.

The Cougars will open the World Series in Eastlake, OH, Friday.
