The Misericordia University baseball team finished a sweep of its MAC Freedom Semifinals series with an 8-3 win over DeSales, Saturday at Tambur Field.
Joe Comins had two hits and three RBI as the Cougars scored seven runs in the their last three at bats to overcome an early deficit.
Jack Regenye had two hits, including a double, and
Connor Maryniak and
Brock Bollinger both doubled.
Steve Rinda scattered 10 hits over six innings to get the win with relief help from
Tyler Leonard and
Matt Lanzendorfer.
Leonard worked a perfect seventh and Lanzendorfer struck out two over two innings to get the save.
Down 1-0, the Cougars took advantage of a pair of Bulldogs' errors in the third to tie the score.Â
Brooks Kanwisher to right and advanced to second on an error and came around when
Owen Cordner reached on an error.
DeSales strung together three straight two-out hits to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth.
The Cougars took their first lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Bollinger doubled inside the third base bag and scored on Maryniak's one-hop double off the wall in left center. Comins followed with a bad-hop single over the first baseman's head to give MU a 3-2 lead.
DeSales tied the score on a sac fly, but the Cougars avoided further damage on an 8-6-5 relay when the trail runner over slid third base.
A couple DeSales miscues helped the Cougars take the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Cordner struck out, but reached on a wild pitch. McIlhenney reached on a fielder's choice and went to third when Regenye blooped a double to shallow left field. Bollinger reached on an infield chopper when the throw was wide of the bag at first to give MU a 4-3 lead. Maryniak was walked intentionally and Comins laced the first pitch to right field to make it 6-3.
Following a pitching change in the eighth, Cordner was hit by a pitch and McIlhenney and Regenye both singled in insurance runs and stretch the MU lead to 8-3.
The Cougars will host the MAC Freedom championship series beginning Friday at 3:30.
