The Misericordia University women's volleyball team won a pair of matches to give head coach Colleen Stengel her first career victory, Saturday at the University of Scranton Invitational.
The Cougars swept New Paltz, 3-0, and came from behind to beat the United States Coast Guard Academy, 3-0.
Jenna Schuda had eight kills and 19 assists in a 25-18, 25-18, 25-16 win over New Paltz.Â
Cassandra Genduso had a team-high five aces and
Keira McCaffrey led the Cougars with four blocks.
Meghan Peters had 19 kills and McCaffrey had five blocks at Coast Guard.Â
Sarah Journey had seven aces and
Jessica Cleveland had 24 digs and three aces.
Peters and Cleveland were named to the all-tournament team.
Against New Paltz, the Cougars led most of the opener before the Hawks scored five straight points to take a 16-15 lead.
Genduso had two aces as the Cougars broke a 17-17 tie with an 8-1 run to end the first set.
In the second set, Genduso had three more aces as part of a 9-0 run as the Cougars took a 16-5 lead.
Misericordia jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the finale and never looked back in the finale.
Against the Coast Guard, the Cougars faced match-point as they trailed 24-23 in the fourth set, but rallied for straight points to stay alive. After an attack error tied the set, McCaffrey put MU in front with a solo block and Peters clinched a 26-24 win with a kill.
Genduso and Journey had two aces each as part of a 9-1 run to give the Cougars a 12-4 lead in the fifth set.
