Lily Metress made the most of her Senior Appreciation Day as she scored the only goal of the game midway the fourth quarter to give the Misericordia University field hockey team a 1-0 win over Penn State Harrisburg, Saturday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.
The only senior on the team, Metress took an insert pass on a penalty corner from Emily Ervin and flicked a shot from the top of the circle over the head of the Lions goalie at 52:38.
The Cougars carried the play throughout the contest and dominated the stats with a 35-4 advantage in shots.
Misericordia had a 17-2 advantage in penalty corners.
After finally cashing in, the Cougars had three near-misses as they tried to add an insurance goal in the final minutes.
Metress tapped a shot in front of the net that was just wide of the right post with 2:59 to play.
Ava Cirigliano's shot less than a minute later was denied on a diving save at the left post and Ashley Pitz pushed a shot just wide right with less than two minutes to play.
MU had several close calls in the first half, including Ellie Hershey's shot off the right post late in the second quarter.
The Cougars turned up the pressure in the fourth quarter and finally broke through on Metress' game-winner.
