The Misericordia University women's soccer team continued their strong start with a 1-0 win over #8 John Carrol in the final game of the Cougar Classic, Sunday at Mangelsdorf Field
Â
Julia Beck notched her first goal of the season early in the second with an assist from
Madison Brdaric as the Cougars improved to 5-0.
Â
After a back-and-forth start to the first half, Cougars' goalkeeper
Lauren Mondor was tested at 28:38 with a tough-angle shot from the far side of the box. Mondor made the leaping grab to keep the match scoreless.
Â
Later in the half,
Emma Sweitzer threatened to put Misericordia on the board with a pair of shots in a two-minute span. Her first was earmarked for the upper-left corner of the goal, but was deflected away by the Blue Streaks' keeper at 35:47. Shortly after, Sweitzer danced around a John Carroll defender and fired a shot off the crossbar at 37:51.
Â
MU had another close call when
MK Peters headed a ball that narrowly missed the right goalpost just a minute later. Despite the scoring chances, the Cougars and Blue Streaks entered halftime knotted at 0-0.
Â
John Carroll wasted no time putting the ball on goal as Mondor was forced to make a save less than 30 seconds into the second half.
Â
Misericordia answered 10minutes later, moving the ball down field to Brdaric, who cut through traffic and dropped a pass to Beck, who rocketed a shot into the upper-right corner at 54:26.
Â
Sweitzer nearly secured her sixth goal of the season once again at 22:46 when she rifled a shot from 20 yards out that hooked just right of the goal at 67:46.
Â
Lily Heistand nearly doubled the Cougars' lead with a shot from just outside the box that rang the crossbar at 76:15. Heistand grazed the crossbar once again at 83:49.
Â
Misericordia outshot the Blue Streaks 28-10 and was awarded 13 corner kicks to John Carrol's one. Mondor recorded three saves to collect her fifth shutout of the season.
Â
The Cougars return to Mangelsdorf Field to host Montclair State, Wednesday at 7:00.
