The nationally-ranked Misericordia University men's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on the final day of the SUNY-Poly Invitational, Sunday in Utica, NY.
The #14 Cougars lost to #10 Hobart, 3-2, and then fell to Westminster (MO), 3-1.
Jared Piontkowski had 22 kills against Hobart and
Anthony DePalma had 14 kills and three aces.
Thomas Young had 11 kills.
Gannon DeFrain had 53 assists and three blocks and
Benjamin Clendening added five blocks.
Piontkowski led the way with 14 kills against Westminster while DePalma had 11 and Young added nine.
DeFrain had 33 assists while
Matt Albrecht had four aces and
Tyler Knoop had four blocks.
Clendening was named to the all-tournament team.
Hobart took the opener 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 15-25, 15-10.
Hobart used a 6-1 run to break a 15-15 tie in the opening set.
Tied 19-19 in the second set, Piontkowski had four kills to give MU a 24-23 lead and
Richie Ragonese closed the win with an ace.
Kozak's kill tied the third set, 21-21, but Hobart scored four straight points for the win.
Clendening had three kills in a 10-1 run to give MU a 19-10 lead on the way to a win in the fourth set.
Young had two kills to help MU take an 8-5 lead in the finale, but Hobart scored seven straight points to take control.
Against Westminster, the Cougars trailed throughout the first set and a late run that included two kills from
Logan Romeika came up short in a 25-21 loss.
Two straight aces from Albrecht gave MU a 16-13 lead in the second set and the Cougars went on to win, 25-21.
Westminster scored three of the last four points to close a 25-21 win in the third set.
MU took a 6-3 lead in the fourth set, but the Blue Jays answered with a 7-0 run to take a 10-6 lead.
Down 21-12, the Cougars scored seven straight points to get within, 21-19. Two Westminster attack errors cut the margin to 22-21, but the Blue Jays held on for the 25-22 win.
