MU Hockey Takes Series Opener Against Lebanon Valley

The Misericordia University hockey team defeated Lebanon Valley, 4-2, in their MAC showdown, Saturday night at the Toyota SportsPlex.

James Eng, Jack Tos, Corbin Scheibel and Ethan Hollingsworth all scored as the Cougars picked up their second win of the season.

Jake Perrin made 40 saves in 53:07 before exiting in the third period and Anthony Shrum made five saves over the final five minutes.

Scheibel opened the scoring within the first minute of play in the first period, blowing by a defenseman and beating the goaltender with a wrist shot at 00:57.

In the second period, Hollingsworth reclaimed MU's lead by burying a rebound on a 3-on-2 rush at 11:25 of the middle frame to make it a 2-1 contest.

Eng gave the Cougars an insurance marker late in the third, tapping in a backdoor cross-ice feed and putting Misericordia up, 3-1, at 15:32.

Tos put the nail in the coffin with an empty net goal at 19:06 as MU finished off their 4-2 victory.

The Cougars set the tone offensively almost immediately, scoring just 57 seconds into the first period. Dom Della Civita sent a breakout pass to Brendan Vettraino, who dodged a hit and moved the puck forward to Scheibel. Scheibel wheeled around a Dutchman defender and wristed a shot past the netminder's glove side to put MU up, 1-0. Vettraino and Della Civita assisted on Scheibel's first collegiate goal at 19:03.

Misericordia's goaltender was tested early on, as Jacob Perrin made three consecutive saves in a 15-second span during the fifth minute of action. Perrin made four more saves before the midway point in the first period.

MU's skaters helped keep Lebanon Valley off the scoresheet as Zach Ross, Jack Tos and Vettraino all laid out to block shots in the ladder stage of the first frame.

The Cougars exited the ice after 20 minutes of play with a 1-0 advantage.

The Dutchmen mirrored MU's start to the first period, lighting the lamp just 33 seconds into the second frame to tie the game at 1-1.

LVC continued to apply pressure in the offensive zone, but Perrin stood tall and turned aside three more shots to keep the game knotted at one goal apiece.

Lebanon Valley headed to the power play at 5:12, but were held to a single shot thanks to a strong effort by Misericordia's penalty kill unit.

Both teams were assessed penalties midway through the second period, leading to a stretch of 4-on-4 play. Jonathan Lush broke out of the Cougars' defensive zone and sent a give-and-go pass to Eric Honold. Honold sent a puck towards the goal that was tipped by Lush on its way to the net. Lebanon Valley's goalie made the initial save, but left a rebound that went right to the stick of Hollingsworth. Hollingsworth buried a shot into the open goal mouth to put MU back in the lead, 2-1. Lush picked up a helper on Hollingsworth's fourth of the season at 11:25.

The Dutchmen continued to search for a game-tying goal but found themselves trailing 2-1 after 40 minutes.

LVC was assessed a pair of overlapping penalties early in the third period, sending MU to a 5-on-3 man advantage for a minute and 17 seconds. The Cougars swiftly moved the puck around the offensive zone and sent five shots towards goal, all of which were either blocked or saved by the goalie.

Misericordia took a penalty at 5:57, causing the penalty killers to face a barrage of shots by Lebanon Valley. Perrin maintained his poise and turned aside five shots during the two-minute minor to preserve MU's one goal lead.

As time ticked down in the third period, Ryan Karbach picked off a pass in the neutral zone and raced towards the goal from the far side. He delivered a tape-to-tape pass to Eng, who was crashing the net. Eng tapped the puck into the goal a split second before crashing into the left post, giving Misericordia a 3-1 lead. Karbach was awarded the lone assist on Eng's team-leading fifth of the season at 15:32.

Shortly after the goal, LVC elected to pull their goalie in favor of an extra skater. The Dutchmen scored at 17:05, still trailing 3-2.

Lebanon Valley pulled the goalie again at 18:48, but struggled to maintain possession in the Cougars' end of the ice. An attempted clear by a Misericordia defender deflected off the stick of an LVC player and landed right on the tape of Tos, who had plenty of space to himself by the MU blue line. Tos skated the puck down the ice and dumped it into the back of the net to restore the two-goal lead. Tos' fourth goal of the season came unassisted at 19:06.

Scheibel and Karbach both won eight faceoffs while Tos recorded two blocks.
