The #16 nationally-ranked Misericordia University women's soccer team dropped a tough 2-1 decision to York (PA) in its final non-conference matchup of the season, Wednesday night at Mangelsdorf Field.
After the Cougars took a late lead, the Spartans scored twice in a six-minute span and survived a penalty kick in the closing seconds to escape with the win.
The match appeared destined for a scoreless draw as neither team was able to capitalize on their opportunities for the most of the evening.Â
MU finally broke through when
Caelan Gallagher scored on a rebound in the 79
th minute.
After
Brenna Field's service on a corner kick was deflected off the crossbar by the Spartans keeper, Gallagher stuffed the rebound under the crossbar at 78:52.
York tied the match just over three minutes later and took a 2-1 lead with less than two minutes remaining.
With time winding down, the Cougars earned a corner in the closing seconds that resulted in a PK with just six seconds remaining. The Spartans keeper made a diving stop to her right as the clock ran out.
Misericordia had one of its best chances of the night off the opening tap. Esa Mendola carried down the left side and played a ball to
Lily Heistand in the box where her one-timer was saved near the right post just 16 seconds into the mach.
Mendola and Gallagher put two more shots on target in the first 15 minutes of the match, but both were saved.
The match quieted down for the remainder of the half and was scoreless at halftime.
Misericordia will return to conference play and battle DeSales at home, on Saturday afternoon.
