Cougars Remain Perfect in MAC With Another Last-Play Win

The Misericordia University football team scored on the last play of the game for the second consecutive week to improve to 5-0 in the MAC with a 29-28 win at Stevenson.

The Cougars pulled within 28-27 with a touchdown on the last play of regulation and converted the two-point try to secure their first-ever win over the Mustangs.

Jacob Hoy caught his third touchdown pass of the game and then hauled in the two-point conversion as the Cougars won on homecoming for the third time this season.

Hunter was 17-34 for 204 yards and four touchdowns, including a 38-yard strike to Jassan Whittaker.

Gavin Morris led the MU defense with 13 tackles.

Down 7-0 midway through the first period, the Cougars marched 70 yards in 12 plays to tie score on the first Hunter to Hoy scoring connection of the day.

Hunter scrambled for nine yards for a third-down conversion and hit Rucci on a swing pass for 14 yards on the next play to move the Cougars to midfield.

Rucci picked up 14 yards on a slant on first down to move to the Stevenson 32.

Facing fourth-and-7, Hunter connected with Rucci along the left sideline for 15 yards.

Hoy out-leaped a defender on the left side of the end zone to get the Cougars on the board with :30 left in the first quarter.

RJ Tocco recovered a Stevenson fumble on the ensuing drive to give MU the ball at the Stevenson 38 yard line. Hunter hit Whittaker for a score on the first to give MU a 14-7 lead less than a minute into the second quarter.

Stevenson pulled even late in the first half and the teams headed to halftime tied, 14-14.

The Cougars took the second half kick-off and marched 75 yards to go back in front.

Hunter hit Hoy over the middle to cap a drive that took nearly seven minutes off the clock to give MU a 21-14 lead with 8:02 to go in the third period.

Stevenson scored two straight TDs to take a 28-21 lead early in the fourth quarter to set the stage for the MU magic.

The teams traded punts throughout the fourth quarter and Josh Orozco set up the game-winning drive with a fumble recovery at midfield.

Off a pump-fake by Hunter, Billy McCleery made an over-the-shoulder catch for a 37-yard gain down the right sideline to the Stevenson 13-yard line.

Hunter converted a fourth-and-one on a keeper to set up first-and-goal with less than a minute to play.

Facing a fourth-and-goal, Hunter faked a quarterback draw and hit Hoy across the middle for a touchdown as time expired.

Hunter found Hoy on a perfect out pattern on the right side of the end zone for the game-winning conversion.
