The #16 nationally-ranked Misericordia University women's soccer team celebrated Senior Appreciation Day with a 5-0 win over Lebanon Valley in their regular season finale, Saturday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.
Seniors
Esabella Mendola and
Olivia Maniskas scored twice while
Kimberly Rudy added a goal.
Misericordia's defense really shined in the first half as they held Lebanon Valley to just one shot.
The Cougars offense came out aggressively as well as they dominated possession for most of the half and got plenty of good looks at the goal.
After several close calls, Mendola used her quick footwork to juke two defenders and nail a shot from outside the top right corner of the box, over the outstretched hands of the keeper and into the left side of the net to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead at 28:48.
The Cougars earned a corner kick five minutes later and although the service was batted away, Maniskas gathered the loose ball and scored to lift the Cougars to a 2-0 lead at 34:42.
Misericordia continued to bring pressure in the second half while keeping the ball on the offensive side of the field for most of the half.
Mendola once again found herself with the ball outside the top of the box and found enough space to send the ball just over top of the goalie's hands to propel the Cougars to a 3-0 lead in the opening minute of the second half.
The Cougars scored on a re-start just five minutes later.
Haleigh Wintersteen played the ball to
Brenna Field in the left corner and her service found Maniskas for a header and 4-0 lead at 51:37.
Julia Hayward recovered the ball deep in the right corner, dribbled toward goal and sent a cross to Rudy who knocked it into the goal with ease for a 5-0 lead in the 80
th minute.
The Cougars will host Arcadia in a MAC Freedom Semifinal, Tuesday at 7:00.
