The Misericordia University women's volleyball team advanced to the MAC Freedom championship game for the second straight year with a sweep of Lebanon Valley, Wednesday night on Doc Mould Court.
The top-seeded Cougars will host the title game for the first time in program history when they welcome Stevens to the Anderson Center, Saturday at 4:00.
Meghan Peters led the Cougars with 12 kills while
Jennifer Nicometo and
Cassandra Genduso had eight kills each. The Cougars won 25-11, 25-23, 25-22 to improve to 22-9.
Keira McCaffrey had four blocks and Nicometo added three.
Jenna Schuda had 22 assists and
Maggie Duda had 16 digs.
Playing in front of a frenzied crowd, the Cougars raced out to an early lead in the opening set.
After teaming with McCaffrey for a block, Nicometo followed with a smash down the left side to give Mu a 5-1 lead.
Peters had back-to-back kills from the left side and an LVC error made it 12-4.
Genduso split two LVC players in the back row and followed with a touch kill in the middle to key a 4-0 to give MU a 17-7 lead.
Peters had a great get on an LVC free gall and Genduso finished a long rally with a smash down the middle to make it 18-9.
Up 21-11, Nicometo hit through a pair of blockers to start a run of five straight points to close the 25-11 win.
Two kills from McCaffrey and three Leb Val errors gave the Cougars a 6-3 lead in the second set, but the Dutchmen rallied to take a 13-10 lead.
The teams traded points throughout the middle portion of the set with Lebanon Valley eventually grabbing a 23-21 lead.
Schuda's left-handed kill in the middle got the Cougars within a point and two LVC errors put MU up 24-23. Schuda's serve was returned softly and Peters finished the overpass for a 25-23 win.
The Cougars led throughout most of the third set, but Lebanon Valley came out of a timeout to score seven straight points to pull even, 20-20.
MU went back in front on a service error and cross-court smash from the left side made it 22-20.
Leb Val took advantage of two MU errors to the score, 22-22.
Sarah Journey's big dig led to a kill down the middle by Peters and Genduso followed with left side kill off a blocker to set up match point.
Peters finished of another overpass to close out the 25-22 win.
